What is Healthy Start Non‑Emergency Transportation?▾
We provide safe, reliable rides for seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities to get to medical appointments, therapy, pharmacies, and community activities.
What areas do you serve?▾
We currently serve multiple counties across Eastern and Central North Carolina, including Wilson, Halifax, Hertford, Nash, Johnston, Wake, Durham, Orange, and Edgecombe.
Do you only provide medical transportation?▾
No. In addition to medical appointments, we also provide rides for senior center outings, veterans’ activities, church services, and other approved trips.
Booking & Scheduling
How do I book a ride?▾
You can schedule online through our “Book My Ride” portal or call our call center at (252) 674‑1812.
How far in advance should I reserve my trip?▾
Please book at least 24 hours in advance. Same‑day rides are available by phone, depending on driver availability.
Can I schedule recurring rides?▾
Yes. We can set up standing reservations for dialysis, physical therapy, or other recurring appointments.
Costs & Payments
How much does a ride cost?▾
Rates vary based on distance, wheelchair access, and group trips. Local Wilson rides start at $20 roundtrip, and out‑of‑town rides are calculated at $4.15 per mile with a minimum fare. Pricing is subject to change.
Do you accept insurance or Medicaid?▾
At this time we do not accept Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance.
What payment options are available?▾
We accept cash, debit/credit card, PayPal, and checks.
Drivers & Vehicles
Are your vehicles wheelchair accessible?▾
Yes. We offer cars, SUVs, vans, and buses — including wheelchair accessible vehicles.
What training do your drivers have?▾
All drivers undergo background checks, NC Health Registry clearance, and training in CPR, crisis response, defensive driving, and passenger assistance.
Can my caregiver or family member ride with me?▾
Absolutely. One caregiver, family member, or friend may ride with you free of charge if you share the same pickup and drop‑off location.
Service Hours & Availability
What are your hours of operation?▾
Transportation runs Monday–Saturday, 8:00am–11:59pm, with Sunday service available by reservation. Our call center is open Monday–Saturday, 7:00am–5:00pm.
Do you provide transportation on weekends or holidays?▾
Yes, we provide service evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Do you offer door‑to‑door service?▾
Yes. We pick you up at your front door and drop you at your destination entrance. Our drivers can assist with packages and personal items at no additional charge.
